What is low-voltage landscape lighting and why does it need a transformer?
Landscape path and accent lights run on 12 volts, not the 120 volts in your wall. A transformer steps the power down at the source. Sizing that transformer to the total wattage of the fixtures, plus headroom, is what keeps the far lights as bright as the near ones. We size it correctly and run the wire so the voltage holds across the whole run.
Can you put my outdoor lights on a timer or photocell?
Yes. A photocell turns lights on at dusk and off at dawn automatically. A timer holds them to set hours. We can do either, or both together, so your security floods come on at dark and your accent lighting shuts off after midnight. We wire the control at the source so it governs the whole circuit.
What lumen level do I need for security floodlights?
For real deterrence at corners and entry points we usually run 2000 lumens or more per fixture, with the motion zone aimed at the approach to the house, not the sky. Too dim and it does nothing. Aimed wrong and it blinds you instead of the yard. We place and aim each fixture so the coverage is useful.
Are my outdoor light fixtures rated for the spot they’re in?
They have to be. A covered porch is a damp location, an open wall facing the weather is a wet location, and the two call for different fixtures. A damp-rated fixture in a wet spot is the part that fails first. We match the fixture rating to the actual exposure on every light we hang.
Do I need a permit to add outdoor lighting?
Swapping a fixture for a like-for-like one on an existing circuit usually does not. Running a new circuit out to a post lamp or a landscape system does. We tell you upfront which side of that line your job falls on and pull the permit when it is required.

Landscape and garden lighting runs on twelve volts, which means a transformer has to step the power down at the source and feed the whole run. The single most common reason a landscape system looks great by the house and dim at the back fence is a transformer that was undersized or a wire run that was too thin and too long for the load. Voltage drops across the distance, and the far fixtures starve. We add up the wattage of every fixture on the run, size the transformer with headroom, and choose the wire gauge for the length so the last light in the line is as bright as the first. Get that math right and the system looks balanced; skip it and you get a string of lights fading into the dark.
Burial, Sealing, And The Shovel Problem
Outdoor lighting wire that gets buried has to go deep enough to survive the next time someone plants a tree or runs an aerator across the lawn. Low-voltage runs and line-voltage runs have different depth requirements, and the depth also changes depending on whether the wire is direct-buried or run in conduit. We bury to the depth the wiring method calls for, sleeve runs in conduit where they cross under a driveway or a path, and seal every connection that sits below grade so groundwater does not creep into a splice and corrode it. A buried connection you can never see is exactly the one that has to be done right the first time.
Security Lighting That Covers The Approach
A motion floodlight only works if it sees the person before they reach the door. We mount security fixtures high enough and angled so the motion zone covers the walk, the driveway, and the dark corners of the house rather than triggering on every passing cat at the property line. Brightness matters too. A 700 lumen builder special does almost nothing; a 2000-plus lumen fixture aimed at the approach turns a dark side yard into a place nobody wants to be caught standing. We can run them on a photocell so they hold a low glow from dusk and jump to full output on motion, which is the combination most people actually want.
