Outdoor Power Starts With Load Math, Not A Wire Run

An exterior outlet, an EV charger, a spa, a feed to a detached garage: every one of those adds load, and the panel either has the capacity or it does not. The dangerous version of this work skips the calculation, pulls a wire off the nearest circuit, and hopes. Steve Torres opens the panel and runs the numbers before anything gets trenched. Do outdoor outlets have to be GFCI protected?

Yes, every one of them. California code requires ground-fault protection on all outdoor receptacles, with no exceptions. We install weather-resistant devices in weatherproof boxes with in-use covers so the seal holds while a cord is plugged in, and we test every one before we close the job.

How deep does the wire to an outdoor outlet or structure have to be buried?

It depends on how the wire is protected. Direct-burial cable on its own goes deep, around eighteen to twenty-four inches, because only dirt protects it from a shovel. The same circuit run inside conduit can sit much shallower because the conduit is the protection. We follow the code table for the wiring method we are actually using plus any local amendments.

Can you run a sub-panel to my detached garage, shed, or ADU?

Yes. For anything beyond a single light circuit, the right answer is usually a properly sized sub-panel at the structure with its own grounding electrode, not an extension cord run off an indoor circuit. We run the load calculation, size the feeder and the burial to code, pull the permit, and coordinate the inspection.

Can you install an EV charger circuit on an exterior wall or carport?

Yes, and the first step is always a load check on the existing panel. An EV circuit draws enough that we have to confirm the panel has the capacity before pulling a single wire. Outdoors, the receptacle and disconnect have to be weather-rated and GFCI protected. We size the breaker and wire to the charger and the run length.

What does a hot tub or spa circuit need?

A spa needs a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit, a disconnect within sight of the tub at the required distance, and correct bonding so everything metal around the water is at the same potential. This is a code-heavy install and the bonding is where shortcuts get dangerous around water. We do it to the letter and pull the permit.

Adding power outside the walls of the house is where load math stops being optional. An exterior outlet for a pressure washer is one thing. Ground-fault protection is the difference between a tripped outlet and a shock that finds a path through a person to ground. An exterior outlet without GFCI is not a finished outlet.

Burial Depth Is Set By The Wiring Method

How deep an outdoor circuit has to go is not a fixed number, it depends on what the wire is run in. Direct-burial cable on its own sits deep, because only the soil protects it from the next shovel. The same circuit inside rigid or schedule-40 conduit can run much shallower, because the conduit takes the hit instead of the wire. People who guess either bury too shallow and clip the line planting a tree, or trench far deeper than the code ever required. We follow the depth table for the method we are actually using, sleeve runs in conduit where they cross under a driveway or walk, and seal every below-grade connection so groundwater cannot creep into a splice and corrode it out.

EV Chargers, Spas, And RV Outlets

The high-draw exterior loads are where sizing matters most. An EV charger needs a dedicated circuit with the breaker and wire matched to the unit and the run length, plus a weather-rated receptacle or hardwired disconnect outside. A hot tub or spa is a code-heavy install: a dedicated GFCI circuit, a disconnect within sight of the tub at the required distance, and bonding that ties every piece of metal around the water to the same potential so a fault cannot put a voltage difference across someone in the water. An RV outlet, 30 or 50 amp, gets its own dedicated circuit at the pad. Each of these starts with a load check, because adding any one of them to a panel that is already near capacity is how a service gets overloaded.
