Public Safety Power Shutoffs are part of life in the Napa Valley now. When the wind is high and the fire risk climbs, PG&E de-energizes lines across large areas, and Napa sits inside that footprint every year. A few hours without power is an inconvenience. A day or more is a real problem. The refrigerator and freezer thaw, the well pump on hillside and vineyard properties stops, a wine-cellar cooling system goes dark and the cellar temperature starts to drift, medical equipment loses power, and anyone working from home is simply offline. For a tasting room or a downtown restaurant, a shutoff during service is lost revenue and spoiled inventory. A standby generator solves all of that automatically.
What a standby generator actually does
A standby generator is a permanently installed unit that sits outside the building, usually fed by natural gas or propane. It is wired to your electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch. When utility power drops, the transfer switch detects the outage, starts the generator, and switches your property over within seconds. You do not flip anything or drag a cord across the yard. When PG&E power comes back, the switch transfers back and shuts the generator down. Through the entire shutoff, the home or business just keeps running. On a Napa estate that means the cellar stays cold, the well keeps pumping, and the security and gate systems stay live. In a winery it means refrigeration and production do not stop.
Sizing is the decision that matters most
The single most important choice in a generator install happens before anything gets bolted down, and it is the sizing. I run a load calculation on the circuits you actually want backed up. Some Napa homeowners want the whole house. Others want the essentials: the fridge, the furnace, the well pump, the cellar cooler, and enough lighting and outlets to live normally. A winery or a restaurant usually wants the whole panel plus the walk-in and the production line. Either is a fine choice, but the generator and the transfer switch have to match it.
What goes wrong when sizing is skipped

- A unit that is too big means you paid for capacity you will never use.

The most common correction I make is a generator that was purchased before anyone calculated the load. I do it in the right order: figure out what you need to run, then size the system to run it. The transfer switch is the safety, not an accessory
Every system I install includes a properly installed automatic transfer switch, and this is not a place to save money. The transfer switch physically separates your property from the utility grid before the generator energizes your panel. It also protects your generator and appliances from a damaging surge when grid power returns. A generator wired without a proper transfer switch is not a finished job. It is a hazard.
Permitted, fueled, and warrantied
I pull the City of Napa permit, or the Napa County permit for properties outside city limits, connect the natural gas or propane feed, and pass the inspection before I call the job done. Fuel, placement, and how a Napa install comes together
A few practical things decide how a generator install goes on a Napa property. The first is fuel. On the hillside and vineyard lots where there is no gas service, propane is the answer, with a tank sized so the generator can run for the length of outage you want to cover, and shutoffs can run a couple of days. Either way, I size and connect the fuel so the generator runs as long as the supply lasts.
The second is placement. The generator needs a spot that meets code clearances from windows, doors, and the meter, keeps the noise away from bedrooms and neighbors, and gives me a clean run for the electrical and fuel connections. On Napa’s tighter downtown and Old Town lots this takes a little planning, and on a sprawling estate it is a matter of choosing the right spot relative to the panel.
