Generators have gotten popular around here, and I understand why. Between the public safety power shutoffs and the occasional storm, a lot of Vacaville and North Bay homeowners are tired of losing the fridge, the well pump, and the heat for two days at a stretch. A generator is a good answer. But I have been called out to fix enough of them after the fact that I want to walk you through what to know before you write the check.
The transfer switch is where most of the trouble lives
A generator does not just plug into your house. There has to be a transfer switch, and it has to be wired right. The transfer switch is what disconnects your home from the utility grid before your generator feeds power into the house. That is not a convenience feature. It is a safety device.
Here is the part that scares me. When somebody back-feeds a generator into the house without a proper transfer switch, the generator can push power backward onto the utility lines outside. A lineman working to restore your neighborhood, thinking the line is dead, can be killed by that. I have seen homemade setups, suicide cords, and transfer switches wired backward. Every one of those is a real danger, not a theoretical one. This is the single biggest reason I tell people not to self-install.
A properly installed standby generator has an automatic transfer switch that senses the outage, starts the generator, switches the house over, and switches it back when utility power returns. Wired correctly, it just works, and it works safely. Wired wrong, it is a hazard to you and to the crews working in your area.
Sizing: bigger is not automatically better
The second thing people get wrong is size. Some buy a tiny unit and are disappointed when it cannot run the AC. Others buy a giant whole-home unit they do not need and pay for capacity that sits idle. The right size comes from looking at what you actually want to keep running during an outage.
Some people want the essentials: refrigerator, a few lights, the furnace blower, the well pump, and the internet. Others want the whole house to run like nothing happened, including central air and the electric range. Those are very different machines. I sit down with you, look at your real loads, and we figure out what makes sense for how you live and what you want to spend. There is no honest way to do that without running the numbers.
Standby versus portable
Two main paths, and the right one depends on your situation.
- Standby generator. Permanently installed outside, runs on natural gas or propane, starts automatically, and powers your house through an automatic transfer switch. No hauling, no fueling in the dark, no extension cords. More money up front, far less hassle when the power actually goes out.
- Portable generator with a manual transfer switch and inlet box. Cheaper, but you have to roll it out, fuel it, and plug it in every time. Done right, with a real transfer switch and inlet, it is safe and legitimate. The danger is only when people skip the transfer switch.
Either way, the electrical side has to be done by someone who knows what they are doing. I will install the transfer switch and the wiring for whichever path fits you, and I will tell you honestly which one I would pick if it were my house.
Permits, gas, and inspection are not optional
A generator install is permitted work. For a standby unit running on gas, you may also need a gas line and a pad, and that brings in another trade and another inspection. I handle the electrical permit and inspection, and I coordinate so the whole thing passes and gets signed off. A generator that is not inspected is a problem you will discover at the worst possible time, usually when you try to sell the house or file a claim.
What good installation actually looks like
When I install a generator, the transfer switch is sized and wired to code, the connections are torqued to spec, the unit is sited where the exhaust and noise make sense, and I test it under load before I leave. I do not commission a generator by flipping it on for ten seconds and calling it done. I make sure it carries the loads it is supposed to carry, switches over cleanly, and switches back when utility power returns.

Generators are not a one-size purchase, so I do not quote one over the phone. I come out, look at your panel and your loads, talk through what you want covered, and give you a free scope with no obligation. Installation labor carries a lifetime warranty.
