Why Flickering Lights Are Never Just a Bulb Problem

People tell me their lights flicker and then say it is probably just the bulb. Sometimes it is. Maybe one in twenty times. The other nineteen, the flicker is telling you something about the wiring behind the wall, and that something is worth knowing about. After thirty years of chasing these down across Vacaville and the North Bay, I can tell you the three causes I find most, and why the one that looks the most harmless is the one I worry about.

First, rule out the easy stuff

Before I tear into a wall, I rule out the simple explanations. A loose bulb. A bad LED that does not play nice with an old dimmer. A single fixture acting up. If swapping the bulb fixes it and it never comes back, great, you saved a service call. But if it keeps happening, if it spreads to other lights, or if a whole room flickers at once, the bulb was never the issue. Now we are into the wiring, and that is where diagnosis earns its keep.

Cause one: a loose connection

This is the one that gets my attention fastest, because a loose connection is a fire risk. Here is why. Electricity flowing through a tight, clean connection passes through easily. When a connection is loose, the current has to jump a tiny gap, and jumping current makes heat. That spot gets hot every time the circuit is used. Over months and years, the heat damages the wire, the device, and whatever is around it. That is how electrical fires start inside walls, slowly, where nobody can see it.

A loose connection can be at a backstabbed outlet, in a junction box, at a switch, or right at the breaker in the panel. A flicker that comes and goes, especially when something moves or vibrates, often points right at it. When I find one, I do not just snug it and leave. I look at why it loosened and whether the device or wire took heat damage that needs replacing. You do not want a loose connection in your house. It is the quiet kind of dangerous.

Cause two: an overloaded or undersized circuit

If your lights dim or flicker every time a big appliance starts, the microwave, the AC compressor, the dryer, that is a load problem. The circuit, or the panel feeding it, is being asked for more than it can comfortably deliver, so voltage sags for a moment and you see it in the lights.

This is common in older Solano County homes where one circuit ended up doing too much as the household grew. A 1970s kitchen circuit was not designed for a modern microwave, an air fryer, and a coffee maker all at once. The fix is not a bigger bulb. It is rebalancing the load, adding a dedicated circuit for the heavy appliance, or addressing a panel that is simply maxed out. Again, the cure depends on the real cause, which is why I diagnose before I quote.

Cause three: a problem at the panel or the service

Sometimes the flicker is bigger than one circuit. If lights all over the house flicker together, or it tracks with the whole neighborhood, the issue may be at the main panel, the service connection, or even the utility side. A loose main lug, a failing breaker, or a bad neutral can cause flickering across the whole house, and a bad neutral in particular can do real damage to electronics. This is not a DIY zone. The main and the service carry serious current, and they need someone licensed who knows how to work in them safely.

Why ignoring it is the wrong move

I get why people live with a flicker. It is intermittent, it does not seem urgent, and everything else works. But two of the three causes above, the loose connection and the overloaded panel, are exactly the conditions that build heat where you cannot see it. Heat is what starts fires. A flicker is cheap to diagnose now and expensive to ignore. I would rather come out, find it is a five-minute fix, and tell you to stop worrying, than get the other call.

Troubleshooting is the part of this trade I actually enjoy, because it rewards experience. I do not throw parts at a problem. I work it methodically: when does it happen, what is on the circuit, what does the panel read, where is the heat. The goal is to find the real fault, not a likely one, fix it once, and not have you calling back. That is the difference between a guess and a diagnosis.
