Does Your Old Vallejo Home Need A Panel Upgrade?

Towers ECMaster Electrician, CA Lic. 847255Vallejo, CA

Most panel calls I get in Vallejo start the same way: a breaker that keeps tripping, or a homeowner adding something new and wondering if the electrical can take it. Here is how to tell whether your panel has simply run out of room, and what a real upgrade actually involves.

I have spent thirty years on electrical work, and a lot of that time has been in older Northern California homes. Vallejo has one of the oldest housing profiles in Solano County. Blocks of Victorians and early-1900s homes near the waterfront, mid-century neighborhoods up the hill, and a scattering of everything in between. Almost none of it was wired for the way we use electricity now. When someone calls me because their breakers keep tripping, the real issue is usually a service that was never sized for a modern household.

The panel is the heart of the whole system

Your electrical panel is where the utility power comes into the house and gets divided into the circuits that feed every room. Everything downstream depends on it. When the panel is undersized, out of date, or simply worn out, you feel it everywhere: lights that dim when the microwave runs, breakers you have to reset, an outlet in the garage that has never quite worked right. People treat those as separate annoyances. They are usually one problem wearing several disguises.

Signs your Vallejo panel is out of room

  • A breaker that trips under normal use, not just during a storm or a fault.
  • A fuse box instead of breakers, which almost always means an under-serviced home.
  • A 100-amp service on a house that now runs central air, a car charger, or a heat pump.
  • A panel that feels warm, smells faintly of burning, or shows scorch marks.
  • Plans to add an EV charger, an ADU, or major appliances.

Any one of those is worth a look. Two or more together, and you are almost certainly running a service that is maxed out.

The Zinsco and Federal Pacific problem

Two panel brands come up constantly in Vallejo’s older homes, and both deserve special mention: Zinsco and Federal Pacific Stab-Lok. Across the industry, both are documented for breakers that can fail to trip during an overload or a short. That is the one job a breaker exists to do. If you have one of these panels, it is not a maintenance item you keep an eye on. It is a replacement. I have opened plenty of them in Vallejo, and when I find one, replacing it is one of the highest-value electrical upgrades an older home can get.

A breaker that keeps tripping is not being annoying. It is doing its job and telling you the circuit or the panel is past its limit.

What a real panel upgrade involves

An upgrade is more than swapping a box. I start with a load calculation, which adds up the real demand of the home, both what you run today and what you are planning to add. If an EV charger or a heat pump is coming, that goes into the math. Then I look at the entire service path, not just the panel: the mast, the weatherhead, the meter base, the main panel, and the grounding and bonding. A code-correct upgrade brings all of that up to standard. In Vallejo’s older homes, the grounding is frequently the part that has been neglected for decades, and it is not optional to get right.

PG&E, permits, and timing

Because a service upgrade takes the meter and the drop down, PG&E has to disconnect before the work and reconnect after. I handle that coordination and pull the City of Vallejo permit, so you are not chasing utility appointments or paperwork yourself. I sequence the day so your power is off for the shortest window I can manage, usually the same day, and I do not close the panel until the inspector signs off. That inspection record is what protects you at resale and keeps your insurance clean.

If any of this sounds like your house, the honest first step is a load calculation and a free on-site look. Sometimes the answer is that your panel has plenty of room and the real issue is a single circuit. Sometimes it is a full upgrade. Either way, you should know before you spend a dollar. Vallejo Panel Upgrade Questions

How do I know if my Vallejo home needs a panel upgrade?
The common signs are breakers that trip under normal use, a fuse box instead of breakers, a 100A or smaller service, a warm or scorched panel, or plans to add an EV charger, heat pump, or ADU. None of those alone is a guarantee, which is why I run a load calculation before recommending anything. The math tells us whether your service has headroom or is already maxed out.
Are Zinsco and Federal Pacific panels really a problem?
Yes. Both are documented across the industry for breakers that can fail to trip during a fault, which defeats the purpose of a breaker. They are common in Vallejo’s older housing. If you have one, it is a replacement, not a repair, and it is one of the higher-value safety upgrades you can make.
How long does a panel upgrade take?
Most residential service upgrades in Vallejo are a same-day job once the permit and PG&E coordination are lined up. Your power is off only for the window it takes to move the service over, and I do not close the panel until the inspection passes.
Do you coordinate the PG&E shutoff for me?
Yes. A service upgrade takes the meter and drop down, so PG&E has to disconnect and reconnect. I schedule that, pull the City of Vallejo permit, and time the work so your power is off for the shortest window possible. You are not left calling the utility yourself.
How much does a panel upgrade cost in Vallejo?
A 200A upgrade is quoted after a free on-site look, because the price depends on the meter location, the service entrance, and whether the mast and drop need work. I put the full scope in writing before starting. Call (707) 803-6332.
