Two rooms in a Benicia house get asked to do more than they were wired for: the garage and the spare bedroom that became an office. The garage picked up a table saw and a compressor. The bedroom picked up three monitors and a space heater. Neither one got new wiring when that happened, and the breaker is the thing telling you about it.
A dedicated circuit is a simple idea. One breaker in the panel, one wire run, one thing plugged into it. Nothing else shares that run. Most of the outlets in a house are the opposite of that: a single 15 amp breaker feeding a string of receptacles across a couple of rooms, which is fine when those receptacles are running lamps and phone chargers. It stops being fine when one of them is feeding a motor.
Why sharing is hard on equipment
Two things go wrong when a heavy tool shares a circuit. The obvious one is the breaker. Add up a table saw pulling hard through a cut, a shop vac, and the garage fridge, and you are past what that breaker will hold. It trips, which is the breaker doing exactly its job.
The less obvious one is voltage drop. A motor at the end of a long, crowded run starts on less voltage than it wants, pulls more current to compensate, and runs hot. It still spins. It just wears out years early.
What the garage is actually running
Walk a Benicia garage shop and the load list adds up faster than people expect. A cabinet saw or a good contractor saw. A dust collector, which a lot of guys run at the same time as the saw, because that is the point of a dust collector. An air compressor that cycles on its own schedule whether you are ready or not. A welder if the hobby went that direction. A mini-split, because a garage on this side of town in August is not somewhere you want to spend a Saturday.
Each of those wants its own run. The saw and the dust collector especially, since they are the two that get used together, and putting them on one breaker guarantees the trip. The compressor gets its own because it starts without asking. The mini-split gets its own because that is how they are installed anyway.
What the home office is actually running
Offices look harmless and mostly are. A couple of monitors, a workstation, a UPS, a printer, a docking station. That is not a heavy load, and the circuit usually carries it without complaint for most of the year.
Then it gets cold, and somebody brings in a space heater. That is the one. A portable heater on high is most of a 15 amp circuit by itself, and it runs continuously rather than in bursts. Put it on the same run as the office gear and you will find out where the shared circuit goes, usually at the worst moment. If the heater is a winter fixture, it deserves its own circuit, and so does the equipment you would rather not have hard-cycled every time the heater kicks on.
15 amp, 20 amp, and the wire behind them
People ask about 15 versus 20 like it is a preference. It is not. The breaker has to match the wire. Standard trade practice is 14 gauge copper on a 15 amp breaker and 12 gauge on a 20 amp breaker, and the breaker size follows what is in the wall, not the other way around. Swapping a 15 amp breaker for a 20 to stop nuisance trips, on wire that is only rated for 15, is how you turn a nuisance into a fire hazard. The breaker was protecting the wire. Now nothing is.
For a workshop, 20 amp circuits on 12 gauge are the sensible default, and the bigger stationary tools may want 240 volts on their own run. For an office, a 20 amp circuit for the gear and another for the heater covers it with room to spare. What matters is that the whole path is sized together: breaker, wire, and receptacle.
How circuits actually get added
The clean version of this job is a garage subpanel. One feeder from the main panel out to a small panel on the garage wall, and every shop circuit lands there. It keeps the long runs short, gives you spare slots for whatever the shop turns into next, and means the next tool is a half-day job instead of a project. If the garage is detached, which plenty are around here, the feeder gets sized and run properly with its own grounding, and that part is worth doing once and doing right.
Sometimes the main panel has no spare slots. That is a common answer in older Benicia housing stock, and it is a different conversation from adding circuits: it turns into panel capacity, and I would rather look at the panel than tandem-breaker my way around the problem. The extension cord problem
Extension cords are for temporary use, and permanent wiring is not temporary use. A cord is unprotected where it crosses a doorway, it runs warmer than the wire in the wall, and it defeats the whole reason the circuit was laid out the way it was. Undoing that and putting a real circuit where the cord was is straightforward work. It is also the thing I would fix first, before anybody buys another tool.
Getting it scoped
The visit is simple. I look at what you are running now and what you plan to add, open the panel to see what capacity is actually there, and figure out whether this is a couple of home runs or a subpanel. Then you get the scope in writing before anything starts. Permits and inspection are part of the work, not an extra.
