A 100 Amp Service And Three New Loads

The house was wired for a different era of appliances. Now there is air conditioning working hard from June through September, a car that wants to charge overnight, and a heat pump replacing the furnace. Three loads, one service that was never asked to carry them together. Here is how to find out whether it can.

I take this call constantly in the older parts of Dixon. Nothing is broken. The homeowner is just adding something, and somewhere in the process the question came up of whether the panel can take it. Usually nobody has answered that question with numbers yet, which is where I start.

Why a service that was fine is suddenly the constraint

A 100 amp service was a reasonable size for a house whose big loads were a range, a dryer, a water heater, and lights. Everything else was small and intermittent. Under those conditions there was room to spare, and for decades nobody thought about it.

What changed is the character of the loads, not just the count. Air conditioning in this valley is not an occasional comfort, it runs long and hard through the hot months. An EV charger is a large draw held steady for hours in the middle of the night. A heat pump moves the heating load off gas and onto the panel, which is a genuine addition rather than a swap. Each one is significant on its own, and it is their combination that matters, not any single one.

Nothing failed. The house just got asked to do three things it was never sized for, and they all show up on the same panel.

The load calculation is the whole answer

Before anyone talks about a service change, the honest first step is a load calculation. It is not a guess and it is not a rule of thumb. I add up the demand of what is actually connected, apply the demand factors the code allows for things that do not all run at once, add the new loads you are planning, and compare the total to the service rating.

The result is a number, and the number decides. I want to know what your main breaker says, what appliances are in the house, what the square footage is, what heating and cooling you have or are moving to, and what you intend to add over the next several years. That last part is the one people skip and then regret, because sizing for today and coming back in two years costs more than sizing once.

What the calculation frequently reveals

  • Room you did not know you had, because the demand factors treat loads more realistically than a straight sum does.
  • Room that exists only if the charger is set to a lower current, which is often a perfectly good trade.
  • A genuine shortfall, where the total exceeds the service and something has to change.
  • Enough capacity at the service but no physical space in the panel, which is a different and usually smaller problem.

The outcome nobody expects: sometimes you are fine

I want to be plain about this, because it is the part that gets left out of most versions of this conversation. A fair share of the time the calculation comes back and the answer is that you have the capacity, and the job is a new circuit rather than a new service.

That happens more than people assume, particularly when the house has gas appliances that are staying, or when the charger can be configured to draw less than its maximum. Most EV chargers can be set to a lower current, and an overnight charge that takes an extra couple of hours is invisible to someone who is asleep. Setting that dial correctly has saved more than a few Dixon homeowners a service change they had already braced for.

There is also a middle answer. Sometimes the service is adequate and the panel is simply full, in which case reorganizing the existing circuits or adding a subpanel gets you the spaces you need without touching the utility side of the job. When the numbers say the service has to grow

Sometimes they do, and there is no talking around it. A service change is a real project. Look at your main breaker and note the number on it. Make a list of what you are adding and roughly when. Then have somebody run the calculation properly, at the house, with the panel open. That single step turns a vague worry into a decision you can actually make, and it frequently costs you nothing but an hour.

Can a 100 amp service handle an EV charger and air conditioning together?
Sometimes, and the calculation is what tells you. It depends on what else is connected, whether your heating is gas or electric, and whether the charger can be set to a lower current. On some Dixon houses the numbers work as they are. On a loaded service they do not. I would rather run it than guess.
Does setting my charger to a lower amperage actually help?
