When A Shutoff Takes The Well Pump With It

In town, a power shutoff is dark rooms and a warm refrigerator. On a parcel outside the city, it is also no water, no livestock troughs, and no irrigation until the utility comes back. That is a different problem, and it deserves a different conversation about backup power.

Public Safety Power Shutoffs are the reason backup power comes up around here, and they behave nothing like a storm outage. They are planned, they are announced, and they can last considerably longer than a line repair because the power stays off while the wind risk lasts. That combination is what makes them worth preparing for rather than riding out.

Losing water changes the math

If your property is on a well, the pump is electric, and when the utility drops so does your water. Not just drinking water. That is showers, toilets, laundry, animals, and anything green you were keeping alive through a Central Valley summer. A pressure tank buys you a small amount and then you are done.

Homeowners on a well tend to understand this immediately and still misjudge how quickly it gets serious. A few hours is manageable. A day or two with livestock to water, in August, is not. That is why on a Dixon parcel the well pump is usually the first thing that goes on the must-run list, ahead of comfort items people assume they will miss more.

Pump motors start hard, and that drives the sizing

It is sized to start that motor, ideally while other things are already running, and to keep going when the pump cycles again. Submersible pumps in deep wells are the demanding case. Add an irrigation pump and you have two motors that must be able to start without fighting each other.

What I want to make plain here is that a rural property has a starting-current problem that a house in a subdivision does not, and it is the single most common reason an undersized unit disappoints its owner.

What usually belongs on the must-run list out here

  • The well pump, first, because everything else assumes water.
  • Refrigeration, including a second refrigerator or freezer in the garage or barn.
  • Enough cooling to keep one part of the house livable through a summer shutoff.
  • Gate operators and security, which people forget until they cannot get in or out.
  • Whatever a septic or effluent pump needs, if the property has one.

Portable and standby are different commitments

A portable generator with a properly installed inlet and an interlock or transfer switch is a real solution, not a lesser one. It costs less, and for a household that is home during shutoffs and does not mind starting a unit and managing fuel, it works. The important word is properly installed. A portable feeding the house through a proper connection is a legitimate system. A cord run to a dryer outlet is a back-feed, and it is dangerous to you and to the crews working the lines.

A standby unit is the other commitment. It is permanently installed, fed by natural gas or propane, and it starts and transfers itself. Nobody has to be home. That matters more than it sounds on a property with animals or a shutoff that begins while you are at work. For a well-dependent parcel it is usually the honest recommendation, because water is not something you want gated on somebody being present to pull a starter cord.

The transfer switch is the non-negotiable part

Either way, the transfer switch is what makes the system safe rather than optional equipment. It separates your property from the utility before your generator energizes anything, so you cannot push power back up a line that a crew believes is dead. It also protects your equipment when utility power returns. A generator connected without a proper transfer means is not a finished installation.

Plan it in a calm month

Backup power is not an emergency purchase. A standby install involves a load calculation, equipment selection, placement that meets clearance requirements, a fuel connection, a permit through the City of Dixon or through Solano County depending on where your parcel sits, and an inspection. None of that happens quickly while the wind is up and everybody in the county wants the same thing.
